Rougher than ashy knees
Rougher than the back of a sink
Rougher than the sponge to clean the skillet
Rougher than grandpop’s feet
Rougher than the hangover from Bob’s frat party
Rougher than a catcus hug
Life is ruff
All they can do is tell me to smile and grind
Challenge yourself.

I look them dead and eye
Saying nothing
Life is rough
and I’m lucky to be tough enough to keep it kicking
